Today I’m sharing one of my favorite easy appetizers. A couple of years ago my now sister in law introduced me to the classic brie, honey and puff pastry appetizer and it’s become one of my favorites! This recipe is based off that flavor profile, but super delicious in it’s own right. The prosciutto adds a saltiness while the asparagus brings freshness to the dish. It’s all topped with a honey butter and I’m telling you you’re going to love it!

Recipe tips
Puff pastry: For this recipe I use store bought puff pastry. You can definitely make your own but I think this is an easy trick to make this recipe quickly! Before working with the dough you want it to be thawed. You should be able to easily unfold it. If it gets too soft pop it in the refrigerator for 15 minutes prior to baking!
Even Asparagus Cuts: Trim the asparagus to fit the puff pastry squares evenly. This ensures each pastry has an equal balance of asparagus, prosciutto, and cheese.
Egg Wash for Golden Finish: Brush the top of each pastry with a light egg wash (1 egg beaten with a splash of milk or water) for a beautifully golden, bakery-style finish. This will also help them to stay sealed!
Butter: I typically bake with salted butter because I like the flavor. If you prefer you can use unsalted and add some kosher salt to the butter mixture!
Parchment paper: I line the baking sheet with parchment paper because the brie and honey butter tends to melt out a bit. This makes it super easy to clean up!
Recommended Cookie Sheet:
I recommend using these baking sheets for the best results. It’s large enough to accommodate multiple pastries and has a lip so if some honey butter does leak out while baking it won’t drip to the bottom of the oven. You can also use a cookie sheet!
Cheese Substitutions for Brie:
If brie isn’t to your taste, try these options:
- Camembert: Similar in texture to brie but with a slightly earthier flavor.
- Gruyère: This nutty, smooth cheese melts beautifully and complements the prosciutto and asparagus.
- Mozzarella: For a milder taste, use mozzarella. It won’t have the same creaminess as brie but melts beautifully and still works well in this recipe.

Brie, Prosciutto & Asparagus Puff Pastries
Ingredients
- 1 package of puff pastry 2 sheets
- 8 tbsp salted butter melted
- 4 tsp honey
- 8 oz Brie
- 1 bundle of asparagus
- 1 tsp olive oil
- 12 slices prosciutto
- 1 egg beaten in a bowl
Instructions
- Remove the puff pastry from the freezer and allow to thaw, about 20 minutes. Preheat oven to 400° and line two large baking sheets with parchment paper. In a small bowl, combine melted butter and honey.
- Trim the stalks of the asparagus and toss in olive oil.
- Cut each puff pastry sheet into 4 rectangles. Rotate the puff pastry into a diamond shape and brush with the honey butter. Top with a slice of folded prosciutto. Top with 3-4 pieces of asparagus and a slice of brie. Brush with additional honey butter.
- Fold the left side over top and brush the puff pastry with the egg wash. Fold right side over and brush top and sides with more egg wash. Place on baking sheet about 1 inch apart and repeat with remaining puff pastry.
- Bake for 15 minutes or until golden brown. Serve with extra honey butter.
These look great, but if it serves 8, why do you call for 12 slices of prosciutto?
The other 4 you snack on while you make this.
I made these for Easter and they were so easy and looked fancy! I think I added too much cheese because it oozed out a little too much, but delicious. Let it cool a little before serving.
Yes the cheese can be a little unpredictable but glad you overall liked the recipe! 🙂
I used cheddar and honey roasted turkey as that’s what I had on hand. Delicious!!! Served with a salad and called it dinner. Can’t wait to try it with brie and prosciutto.
Can you prepare ahead and bake day of? Thanks.
Made these for girls get together, used Camembert cheese and baked 17 minutes. Big hit with everyone
these sound delicious and I want to make them for Easter. How far ahead can they sit on the counter or refrigerated before you bake them?
