Sweetheart Rice Krispie Treats

I am so excited. And if you’ve been around here for a while, you know that means one thing — this recipe is a good one. These Sweetheart Rice Krispie Treats are based on my all-time favorite brown butter Rice Krispie Treat recipe, but dressed up in the cutest Valentine’s Day way. They’re dyed pink, drizzled with swirls of white chocolate, and topped with festive heart sprinkles and nonpareils.

If you’ve never made homemade Rice Krispie Treats with brown butter, prepare to be converted. Browning the butter adds a rich, nutty flavor that instantly elevates this classic dessert, and when you pair it with extra marshmallows, vanilla, and a pinch of salt, the result is soft, gooey, bakery-style Rice Krispie Treats that are nearly impossible to resist.

These are the kind of treats that disappear fast. They’re nostalgic but elevated, incredibly easy to make, and perfect for Valentine’s Day parties, school treats, or just a fun dessert to make at home. Best of all, everything comes together in one pot in under 20 minutes.

Why These Sweetheart Rice Krispie Treats Are Better Than Store Bought

The classic Rice Krispie Treat recipe on the cereal box calls for just 3 tablespoons of butter, one 10-ounce bag of marshmallows, and 6 cups of cereal. It works, but the end result can be dry, bland, and honestly a little forgettable.

This version completely changes the game. By increasing the amount of butter and marshmallows, browning the butter for extra flavor, and adding vanilla and salt, you get a treat that’s richer, softer, and way more flavorful. Finishing them with a white chocolate drizzle and Valentine’s Day sprinkles takes them over the top but in the best way.

Ingredients

Brown Butter
If you follow this blog, you already know how much I love adding brown butter to desserts. This recipe uses 1 cup (2 sticks) of butter, which simmers for about 3–5 minutes until golden brown and nutty. You’ll see little brown flecks throughout the treats, and that’s where all the flavor lives.

Vanilla Extract
Bakery-style Rice Krispie Treats always taste better, and vanilla is the secret. Adding it directly to the hot brown butter creates a warm, caramelized vanilla flavor that really sets these apart.

Marshmallows
I prefer using mini marshmallows because they melt quicker and more evenly. This recipe uses two 10-ounce bags, which gives these treats that perfectly gooey texture.

Kellogg’s Rice Krispies
You’ll need 10 cups of cereal, which you can easily get from a family-size box.

Pink Food Coloring
Just a few drops turn these into festive Sweetheart Rice Krispie Treats without overpowering the flavor.

White Chocolate + Sprinkles
White chocolate brings everything together and adds a little sweetness on top. I drizzle it over half of each cut treat, then finish with Valentine’s Day sprinkles hearts and nonpareils are my favorite. I also topped each one with a larger wilton heart sprinkle!

How to Brown Butter

Browning butter is simple but requires your attention. Add the butter to a large pot over medium heat and let it melt. Once melted, it will begin to foam, this is normal. The butter will foam up twice, and after the second time, it will start to turn golden brown and give off a nutty aroma.

As soon as you see those brown bits forming at the bottom of the pot, remove it from the heat immediately and stir in the vanilla and salt. This stops the cooking process and prevents the butter from burning.

Recipe Tips

  • When transferring the mixture to the pan, resist the urge to press it down firmly. Gently stretch it into the pan and lightly pat it level to keep the treats soft and gooey.
  • If the mixture is sticking to your hands, run a few drops of water over them and rub them together before handling the Rice Krispie mixture. The water prevents sticking without affecting the texture.
  • This recipe is made in a 9×13 pan. Using one with a lid makes it easy to transport for parties, potlucks, or school events.
  • Drizzle the white chocolate while the treats are completely set, then immediately add the sprinkles so they stick before the chocolate sets.

These Sweetheart Rice Krispie Treats are one of my favorite Valentine’s Day desserts. They’re quick, festive, and incredibly easy to make, but they still feel special. With rich brown butter flavor, extra marshmallows, and fun toppings, they’re a guaranteed crowd-pleaser for any Valentine’s celebration. These Sweetheart Rice Krispie Treats are made with rich brown butter, extra marshmallows, vanilla, and a pinch of salt for the ultimate soft and gooey texture. Prep Time 5 minutes
Cook Time 10 minutes
Course Dessert
Servings 16 slices

Ingredients

  • 1 cup salted butter I prefer salted but you can use unsalted
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 20 oz mini marshmallows
  • pink food dye
  • 10 cups Rice Krispies
  • ¼ cup sprinkles

Instructions

  • Line a 9×13 pan with parchment paper. Lightly mist with nonstick cooking spray and set aside. In a large pot melt your butter. Once melted, continually stir until the butter just begins to brown. The butter should foam up twice and then begin to give off almost a nutty aroma. Immediately remove from heat so the butter does not burn.
  • Immediately stir in the two teaspoons of vanilla extract. The hot mixture will bubble up, so continue to stir an additional thirty seconds until the sizzling subsides.
  • Add in one bag or half of your marshmallows and mix until almost completely melted before adding the remaining. Stir until all of the marshmallows are entirely combined and melted. Add in the pink food dye, a little at a time (I usually end up using about ¼ – ½ tsp) and mix until it reaches desired color.
  • At this point, add in the Rice Krispies, 2 cups at a time, and lightly stir until combined. Continue to add the Rice Krispies until everything is evenly combined. Add in sprinkles and stir to incorporate.
  • Pour the mixture into the 9×13 pan. Lightly wet your hands and gently push into the pan to the edges. You don't want to crush it, so really be gentle with it!
  • Break up the white chocolate and add to a heat proof bowl. Microwave for 30 seconds, stir and repeat until completely melted. Once it's ready, set aside for 3 minutes to chill down to room temperature. Using a spoon, drizzle in a circular motion the white chocolate onto the treats. Sprinkle on a few different types of valentines day sprinkles and top each with a large wilton heart, enjoy!
