Pretzel Pumpkin Patch Rice Krispie Treats

These Pretzel Pumpkin Patch Rice Krispie Treats are the perfect combination of sweet, salty, crunchy, and gooey! Made with my favorite brown butter Rice Krispie treat base, they’re loaded with chopped pretzels and Halloween Oreos, topped with crushed Oreo “dirt,” and finished with candy corn pumpkins to create the cutest little pumpkin patch. They’re an easy, no-bake Halloween dessert that’s just as delicious as it is adorable!

If you’ve been following along for a while, you know how much I love my Brown Butter Rice Krispie Treats. They’re one of my all-time favorite recipes, and I swear the combination of brown butter, vanilla, and extra marshmallows makes them a million times better than the original. For this spooky version, I decided to add salty pretzels and Halloween Oreos, and OH MY GOSH. The saltiness from the pretzels balances out the sweet marshmallows, the Oreos add that delicious cookies and cream flavor, and the brown butter brings everything together. And obviously, we had to turn them into a pumpkin patch for Halloween!

Why You’ll Love These Pretzel Pumpkin Patch Rice Krispie Treats

  • Brown butter makes everything better: Browning the butter adds a rich, nutty, almost caramelized flavor that takes these treats to another level.
  • The perfect sweet and salty combination: Crunchy pretzels balance out the sweetness from the marshmallows and Oreos.
  • Extra gooey: These treats have the BEST soft, gooey texture thanks to plenty of butter and marshmallows.
  • No baking required: Everything comes together in one pot in about 20 minutes!
  • Perfect for Halloween: The crushed Oreo dirt and candy corn pumpkins make these such a fun addition to any Halloween party or spooky dessert table.

The Ingredients

Brown Butter: This is what makes my Rice Krispie treats so good! Instead of simply melting the butter, we’re browning it until it develops a rich, nutty aroma. It adds so much flavor and makes these taste like something you’d get from a bakery.

Mini Marshmallows: I always use mini marshmallows because they melt quickly and evenly. The extra marshmallows are what give these treats their soft, gooey texture.

Vanilla Extract: Vanilla is one of my favorite additions to homemade Rice Krispie treats. Adding it to the brown butter gives everything a delicious caramelized vanilla flavor that pairs perfectly with the Oreos and pretzels.

Kosher Salt: Just a little salt helps balance the sweetness and brings out all those delicious brown butter flavors. Even though we’re adding pretzels, I still like to include a little kosher salt in the base.

Rice Krispies Cereal: The classic crispy cereal that holds everything together!

Mini Pretzels: Roughly chopped mini pretzels add the BEST salty crunch. You want some smaller pieces and some larger chunks so you get that pretzel flavor and texture in every bite.

Halloween Oreos: The orange creme Halloween Oreos make these extra festive and add a delicious cookies and cream flavor. Roughly chop some to mix into the Rice Krispie treats, then crush additional Oreos to create the dirt on top.

Candy Corn Pumpkins: These are what turn regular Rice Krispie treats into an adorable pumpkin patch! Simply press them into the crushed Oreo topping while the mixture is still soft.

Recipe Tips

Don’t skip browning the butter. I know it might seem like an unnecessary extra step, but trust me, it’s worth it! Melt the butter over medium heat and continue stirring as it foams. The butter will foam up twice, and after the second time you’ll notice little golden brown specks and a nutty aroma. Immediately remove it from the heat so it doesn’t burn. Those little brown specks are packed with flavor!

Use mini marshmallows. Mini marshmallows melt much faster than the larger ones, making them easier to incorporate into the butter. I like to add half of the marshmallows first, stir until they’re almost melted, and then add the remaining half. This helps everything melt evenly.

Roughly chop your pretzels and Oreos. You don’t want to turn the pretzels into crumbs! Keeping some larger pieces gives these treats that delicious salty crunch. The same goes for the Oreos you’re mixing into the base. You want actual pieces of cookies throughout the treats rather than finely crushed crumbs.

Let the mixture cool slightly before adding the Oreos. Once you’ve stirred in the Rice Krispies and pretzels, allow the mixture to cool for a minute or two before folding in the chopped Halloween Oreos. This helps prevent the orange creme from melting completely into the warm marshmallow mixture.

Don’t press the mixture down too firmly. This is one of my biggest tips for making soft, gooey Rice Krispie treats! When transferring the mixture to your pan, gently stretch it toward the edges and lightly pat it into place. You don’t want to pack everything down because that can make the treats dense and hard instead of soft and chewy.

Add the toppings while the mixture is still sticky. After spreading the Rice Krispie mixture into the pan, immediately sprinkle the crushed Oreo dirt over the top and gently press it into the marshmallow mixture. Then add your candy corn pumpkins, pressing each one down just enough to hold it in place. If you wait until the treats have completely set, the toppings won’t stick nearly as well.

Choose the right baking pan. I like using an 8×8-inch baking pan for these Rice Krispie treats because it gives them that perfect thick, gooey texture. If you’re making these for a Halloween party or a larger crowd, you can easily double the recipe and use a 9×13-inch baking pan instead! Just remember not to press the mixture down too firmly so the treats stay soft and chewy.

How to Keep Rice Krispie Treats From Sticking to Your Hands or Spatula

If you’ve ever made homemade Rice Krispie treats, you know just how sticky that melted marshmallow mixture can be! But I have the easiest trick, and all you need is a little water. Before touching the mixture, simply run your hands under water, shake off the excess, and rub them together so they’re lightly damp. The water creates a barrier that prevents the marshmallows from sticking to your fingers, making it SO much easier to spread the treats into the pan. You can do the exact same thing with your spatula! Just run it under a little water, shake off the excess, and use it to gently spread and level the mixture. No sticky mess, no fighting with the marshmallows, and no need to press everything down too firmly. It’s seriously such a game changer!

How to Make the Oreo Dirt Pumpkin Patch

This is probably my favorite part of the entire recipe because it’s SO easy but makes the cutest Halloween dessert! Start by crushing a handful of Halloween Oreos into fine crumbs. You can do this in a food processor or simply place them in a zip-top bag and crush them with a rolling pin. I like using the whole Oreo, creme and all, although you can use regular Oreos if you prefer a darker dirt appearance.

Once you’ve gently spread the Rice Krispie mixture into your pan, sprinkle the crushed Oreos evenly over the top. Lightly press them into the marshmallow mixture so they stick and create a layer of edible dirt. Then take your candy corn pumpkins and press them into the top, spacing them out across the pan. You can arrange them in little rows like an actual pumpkin patch or scatter them around for a more playful look. The orange pumpkins against the dark Oreo crumbs make these SO cute, and the whole thing takes just a couple of minutes!

How to Store Pretzel Pumpkin Patch Rice Krispie Treats

Store these Rice Krispie treats in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days for the best texture. I don’t recommend refrigerating them because the cold can make the marshmallows firm and the treats lose that soft, gooey consistency. If you’re stacking the treats, place a piece of parchment or wax paper between the layers to prevent them from sticking together.

These are definitely best enjoyed within the first day or two, especially because of the pretzels. Over time, the pretzels can absorb some moisture from the marshmallow mixture and lose a little of their crunch. They’ll still taste delicious, but that sweet and salty crunch is one of the best parts of this recipe!

The Perfect Easy Halloween Dessert

Whether you’re making these for a Halloween party, a school celebration, or just because you want something festive and delicious, these Pretzel Pumpkin Patch Rice Krispie Treats are such a fun treat to make. They’re easy, require no oven, and combine all of my favorite things: brown butter, gooey marshmallows, crunchy pretzels, and Oreos. Plus, the little candy corn pumpkin patch on top is almost too cute to eat. Almost. 🙂

These gooey brown butter Rice Krispie treats are loaded with salty pretzels and Halloween Oreos, then topped with crushed Oreo dirt and candy corn pumpkins for the cutest sweet and salty Halloween dessert!
Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 5 minutes
Course Dessert
Servings 9 slices

Ingredients

For the treats:

  • ½ cup salted butter you can use unsalted if you prefer
  • 10 oz mini marshmallows
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup roughly chopped mini pretzels
  • 1 cup roughly chopped Oreos I used Halloween Oreos but you can use whatever kind you prefer!
  • 5 cups Rice Krispies

For the topping:

  • ½ cup Oreos finely crushed into 'dirt'
  • candy corn pumpkins as many as desired!

Instructions

  • Line an 8×8-inch baking pan with parchment paper and lightly mist with nonstick cooking spray. Set aside. In a large pot over medium heat, melt the butter. Once melted, continue stirring as the butter begins to foam. The butter will foam up twice, and after the second time it will begin to turn golden brown and give off a nutty aroma. Immediately remove from the heat to prevent burning.
  • Carefully add the vanilla extract to the brown butter. The mixture will bubble and sizzle, so continue stirring for about 30 seconds until the bubbling subsides. Add half of the mini marshmallows to the pot and stir until almost completely melted. Add the remaining marshmallows and continue stirring until the mixture is smooth and fully combined. If needed, return the pot to low heat briefly to help the marshmallows melt.
  • Add the Rice Krispies cereal about 2 cups at a time, gently stirring until evenly coated in the marshmallow mixture. Fold in the roughly chopped mini pretzels and Oreos until evenly distributed.
  • Transfer the mixture to the prepared 8×8-inch pan. Lightly wet your hands or spatula with water and gently spread the mixture toward the edges of the pan. Be careful not to press down too firmly, as this can make the treats dense.
  • While the mixture is still sticky, evenly sprinkle the finely crushed Halloween Oreos over the top to create the dirt. Gently press the crumbs into the marshmallow mixture. Arrange the candy corn pumpkins across the top, lightly pressing each one into the Oreo dirt so it stays in place. Allow the treats to set at room temperature for approximately 15-20 minutes before lifting them out of the pan and cutting into squares. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Brown Butter: Watch the butter carefully as it browns. Once you see golden brown specks and smell a nutty aroma, remove it from the heat immediately.
  • Pretzels: Roughly chop the pretzels rather than crushing them completely so you get salty, crunchy pieces throughout.
  • Oreos: Halloween Oreos give these a festive orange color inside, but regular Oreos will work just as well.
  • Sticky Marshmallows: Lightly wet your hands or spatula with water before spreading the mixture to prevent sticking.
  • Don’t Overpack: Gently spread the mixture into the pan without pressing down firmly to keep the treats soft and gooey.
  • For a Larger Batch: Double all ingredients and use a 9×13-inch baking pan. The treats may be slightly thicker, but they’ll be just as delicious!
  • Storage: Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. Best enjoyed within the first 1–2 days for optim
