Oreo Texas Sheet Cake

If you love Oreos, you’re going to fall in love with this Oreo Texas Sheet Cake. It has everything you love about a classic Texas sheet cake, rich chocolate flavor, an incredibly soft and fudgy texture, and that signature warm frosting but with a cookies and cream twist.

What makes this version extra special is the use of black cocoa powder, which gives the cake that iconic dark Oreo color and flavor. Real Oreo cookies are blended into the batter for even more cookies and cream goodness before the entire cake is topped with a creamy vanilla frosting loaded with crushed Oreos and finished with even more chopped cookies.

It’s rich, nostalgic, and completely irresistible. Whether you’re baking for a birthday, holiday gathering, potluck, or simply because you’re craving Oreos, this is the kind of dessert everyone comes back for seconds of.

Why You’ll Love This Oreo Texas Sheet Cake

If you’ve never made a Texas sheet cake before, you’re in for a treat. Unlike a traditional layer cake, Texas sheet cakes are baked in a large sheet pan, making them incredibly easy to prepare while still serving a crowd. The warm frosting is poured directly over the cake while it’s fresh from the oven, creating the signature soft, fudgy finish that makes this dessert so famous.

Adding Oreos takes everything to the next level. The black cocoa gives the cake its deep color, while the cookies throughout the cake and frosting create the perfect cookies and cream flavor in every bite. If you’re looking for an Oreo dessert that’s easy enough for a weeknight but impressive enough for a party, this recipe checks every box.

Tips for the Best Oreo Texas Sheet Cake

Using black cocoa powder gives this cake its signature Oreo-inspired look while also adding that familiar cookie flavor. If you’ve never baked with black cocoa before, don’t worry, it’s easy to use and creates an incredibly dramatic cake that’s perfect for cookies and cream desserts.

For the richest chocolate flavor, I like using hot coffee in the batter. It doesn’t make the cake taste like coffee—instead, it simply enhances the chocolate and helps balance the sweetness of the Oreos.

Be careful not to overbake the cake. Texas sheet cake is known for being soft, moist, and fudgy, and pulling it from the oven as soon as it’s done helps keep that perfect texture.

Finally, pour the frosting over the cake while it’s still warm. This allows the frosting to melt slightly into the top of the cake, creating that classic Texas sheet cake finish everyone loves.

Storage

Store any leftover Oreo Texas Sheet Cake tightly covered at room temperature for up to 3 days or in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. The cake stays wonderfully soft, and I honestly think it’s even better the next day once all of the flavors have had time to come together.

Can I Freeze Oreo Texas Sheet Cake?

Absolutely! This cake freezes beautifully. Once completely cooled, wrap individual slices or the entire cake tightly and freeze for up to 3 months. Let it thaw overnight in the refrigerator or on the counter before serving.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is black cocoa powder?

Black cocoa powder is an ultra-Dutch processed cocoa that gives Oreo cookies their signature dark color and distinctive flavor. It creates a darker cake than regular cocoa powder and is perfect for cookies and cream desserts.

Does the coffee make the cake taste like coffee?

Not at all! The coffee simply enhances the chocolate flavor and makes the cake taste richer. If you prefer, you can substitute hot water instead.

Can I make this ahead of time?

Yes! In fact, this cake tastes even better after it’s had several hours to cool. It’s a great make-ahead dessert for birthdays, holidays, and parties.

Can I use homemade buttermilk?

Yes! If you don’t have buttermilk on hand, you can easily make your own with milk and a little vinegar or lemon juice.
